About

A micropub for Southwark

We are searching for an empty shop in the Southwark area that we can turn into a micropub. We came very close to opening the Camberwell Shark on Camberwell New Road in 2019 but there were too many problems with the building and we had to walk away.

Our preference is to find a premises in Camberwell. But we will consider other areas nearby if we find the ideal premises.

But what is a micropub?

According to the Micropub Association, it is “a small freehouse which listens to its customers, mainly serves cask ales, promotes conversation, shuns all forms of electronic entertainment and dabbles in traditional snacks.”

This is what we are looking to bring to Southwark.

The plan for our micropub

Our focus would be on supplying beer that is brewed locally here in South London. There are now over 40 breweries in South London, many of which have started brewing in the last few years.

We will also supply a limited range of cider, wine, gin and soft drinks. Again, these will be sourced locally wherever possible.

We’d aim to play a full part in the local community and would be open to any suggestions as to how we could do this.

What happened to the Camberwell New Road premises?

In September 2018 we received planning permission to turn Zulu’s Beauty Bar on the corner of Camberwell New Road and Warner Road into a pub. Thank you to all those who wrote to the council in support of our application, the comments were appreciated greatly. We also received a premises licence and looked good to go. But a series of links in the basement, in the room we would have used to keep the beer, meant we could not continue. Our blog has more detail here.

Who we are

We have a variety of backgrounds in business, finance, television and the public sector. Graham lives in Camberwell and helps to run the Burgess Park ParkRun. Ben and Graham are season ticket holders at Dulwich Hamlet.
